Constraints as catalysts for transformation
An exploration of an architectural philosophy that transforms the practical demands of clients, cities and infrastructure into bold new possibilities.
On September 24, 18:30, WTC Yerevan will host a Catalyst talk with Catherine Huang, partner at BIG since 2017.
What if a single architectural idea could solve several challenges at once—creating a stronger identity, improving performance, enriching the public realm and generating greater value from the same investment? In this lecture, Cat Huang explores the philosophy of pragmatic utopianism - transforming the practical demands of clients, cities and infrastructure into bold new possibilities.
Spanning typologies from vertical cities like Capita Spring, Suzhou MoCa where galleries, gardens and public routes reinterpret the city’s cultural heritage, Copen Hill, where a waste-to-energy plant becomes an urban mountain for skiing and recreation, and to Yerevan where the AYB school forms spaces for innovation and learning. Together, these projects show how environmental responsibility, public generosity and client value can reinforce one another—producing architecture that is both visionary and grounded in reality.
Key highlights
- Discovering new relationships between architecture, landscape and public space
- Finding value in rethinking typologies
- The role of design in creating livable and human scaled cities
